The Trial plan lets you build with real Production data at no cost, with a cap of up to 10 Production Items. When you're ready to scale — whether you've reached your Item limit, need additional products, or are ready to move to a paid plan — you can apply for full Production access.
When to upgrade
Consider upgrading from Trial to a paid Production plan if:
- You have reached or are approaching your 10-Item limit
- You need products not included in the Trial bundle (such as Payment Initiation, Signal Transaction Scores, or Transfer)
- You are building a commercial product or service
- You need access to additional OAuth institutions beyond those covered by the Trial plan
Note: On the Trial plan, calling /item/remove does not free up slots against your 10-Item cap. If you've reached the limit, upgrading to a paid Production plan is the way to connect more.
Important: Once you submit a Production access application, you cannot revert to the Trial plan. Make sure Trial no longer meets your needs before applying.
How to apply
- Sign in to the Plaid Dashboard.
-
Click Get production access in the left navigation.
3. Complete the Request production access flow, which has four sections: 1. Describe your business — Enter your business type, business details, industry, and app details. This helps Plaid verify your identity and use case. 2. Select your products — Choose the Plaid products you need and describe your use cases. 3. Provide ownership details — Enter beneficial owner information as required. 4. Select your plan — Choose a pricing plan and enter billing details. Most developers moving off Trial will start with Pay-as-you-go (no minimum spend) or Growth (lower per-use costs with an annual commitment). For Custom (Scale) plans, contact Plaid Sales. 4. Submit your application. You will see a confirmation and your application will enter review.
While your application is under review
Your Trial plan remains active while your application is being reviewed — existing Items stay connected, you can continue making API calls against them, and you can connect new Items up to your 10-Item cap.
You may notice the Security questionnaire step on your Dashboard Overview page appears grayed out with the tooltip "Complete previous steps to continue with this step." This is expected — the security questionnaire unlocks once your Production application is approved.
Most applications are reviewed automatically. You will receive an email notification when your application is approved or if additional information is needed. If you have not heard back after several business days, you can ask Bill, Plaid's AI assistant, to check on your application status.
After approval
Once your Production application is approved:
- Your account upgrades to your selected paid plan
- Your existing Trial Items remain connected and continue working
- You gain access to the full product set available on your plan
- Billing begins based on your plan's pricing model — see How much does Plaid cost? for details
- You can track your usage on the Usage page
